About Calcs-Online
Calcs-Online is PorthouseDean's remote structural calculations service. It is the same company and the same engineers, working from your drawings and photographs, with nobody sent to site.
Where Calcs-Online comes from
Sam Dean and Chris Porthouse, both structural engineers, founded PorthouseDean in 2012. The company is based in Manchester, and its engineers have worked on 9,000+ projects since 2012: loft conversions, extensions, knock-throughs, garage conversions and new houses.
Calcs-Online is PorthouseDean Limited trading under a second name, for work that can be done entirely online. You send the drawings; the engineer produces the structural calculations and layout drawings a Building Regulations application needs; the finished documents come to you as PDFs by email.
Remote only
Calcs-Online does not visit site. The engineer works from the drawings, photographs and measurements you send, and asks you when something is missing.

The people behind it
Chris Porthouse, co-founder and director
Chris Porthouse MEng CEng MIStructE is a chartered structural engineer. He began his career in 2006 at Steve Hunt Partnership in Warrington, has spent it on structural alterations and low-rise homes, and oversees every project Calcs-Online and PorthouseDean take on.
Sam Dean, co-founder and CEO
Sam Dean BEng (Hons) started as a trainee structural engineer in 2007 and joined Atkins in 2010, where he worked inside ISO 9001:2015 quality systems. He set up the company with Chris in 2012 and leads it and its product.
Guy Marshall, CTO
Dr Guy Marshall MA (Cantab.) MSc CMath MIMA read mathematics at Cambridge, took an MSc in theoretical physics at King's College London and a PhD in AI at the University of Manchester in 2023. He joined in 2022 and leads the technology Calcs-Online runs on.
