Structural Calculation FAQ's

Frequently Asked Questions

What are structural calculations and do I need them?

They are an engineer’s proof that the parts holding your home up (walls, beams, joists, roof and foundations) can carry the loads your project puts on them. If the work changes any of those, building control will almost always ask to see them.

When will I get my structural calculations?

On the day you pick. Your price comes with a calendar of delivery dates, each showing what it costs, and you choose the one that suits the project.

Do you need to visit my home for structural calculations?

No. Calcs-Online is remote only: the engineer works from your drawings, photographs and measurements and does not come to the property.

What do I need to do to get structural calculations?

Send the architectural drawings if you have them. For simpler jobs, such as a single beam, clear photographs, a sketch and a few measurements are often enough. The engineer works from what you send, so the more complete it is, the fewer questions come back.

What services does Calcs-Online provide?

Structural calculations for home renovations and new homes: steel beams, wall knock-throughs, extensions, loft conversions, bi-fold door openings, garage conversions and new builds.

Do you take on commercial work?

Generally not at the moment. Show us the project and we will tell you whether we can help, or point you to someone who can.

How do I get building regulations approval?

In England there are two routes:

  • Full plans: the drawings and calculations go to building control and are approved before work starts. The council has five weeks to decide, or longer if you agree to it in writing (regulation 14A(6) of the Building Regulations 2010).
  • Building notice: work starts once notice is given, and building control inspects it as it goes.

Meeting building regulations is the responsibility of the person doing the work and the owner of the building. Calcs-Online supplies the structural calculations and answers building control’s technical questions on them; we do not submit the application.

What if building control does not accept my calculations?

Building control has approved every set of calculations Calcs-Online has issued: a 100% approval record. If yours were refused, you would get your money back.

How much do structural calculations cost?

It depends on the work, so we do not publish price ranges. Tell us about the project and you get your price. If you would like an engineer to look at it before you buy, get in touch.

What does a quote not include?

The price covers the calculations building control will need for the work shown in your drawings, pad and strip foundations included. Piled or raft foundations and garden retaining walls are quoted separately if you need them. Parts a manufacturer designs, such as roof trusses and engineered joists, come with the maker’s own calculations. Calcs-Online does not produce architectural drawings or submit the building control application.

Can I get calculations for just one beam?

Yes. Beam-only calculations price one or more beams without a full project quote.

Are you insured?

Yes. Calcs-Online carries professional indemnity insurance.
